Actually yes, I do think it is ok. Research shows that exercising and working out, are one of the ways to help reduce cramps and pain associated with your menstrual cycle. Very often though, a lighter work out would probably be best as being tired is of course one of the things associated with your menstrual cycle.
I am a Yoga fan. And, during menstruation Yoga instructors advise specific, restorative exercises. For me personally, I find that light exercise: stretching, walking, and restorative yoga poses actually helps a great deal at that time of the month. Though, I effort myself not too engage in hard core exercise at that time. Primarily because the menstrual process is already pretty fatiguing, and because my lower back is already strained from the additional pressure that menstruation places on the lumbar region, being ‘nice’ to our spine is always a good idea. So, I focus more on gentle, invigorating exercise.
I would not say that stimulating the lower body with light movement is ill advised. To the contrary gentle stimulation may often be indicated (although probably not on the 1st day of menses, unless one is in the habit of exercise during menses). Gentle stimulation to the area can be very beneficial.
If going to the gym is something that you look forward to, and then I imagine that you can find a lighter, gentler exercise routine to engage in during that time. Sometimes just the fact that we ‘stick to a routine’, like going to the gym, serves a great purpose. So, I think that it’s really a very personal choice. Though, whatever you decide, please do be kind to your body.
I don’t know what equipment you’ve been using at the gym. However, light use of the stationary bicycle would probably be very helpful. And of course, stretching the whole of the body, including the abdomen and full lower body is well advised.
